Think about what you normally take with you when you leave home.
For me, even a fairly simple day can mean a phone, wallet, keys, sunglasses and earbuds.
If I’m going to be out longer, add a charger or portable battery.
If I’m traveling, add a passport and hotel key.
Suddenly two normal pockets aren’t enough.
The usual solution is a backpack or crossbody bag.
That’s perfectly fine most of the time, but there are situations where I’d rather have my hands free and nothing hanging from my shoulder.

I’d much rather keep an extra battery in its own small pocket than have it knocking around next to my keys.

Road trips might actually be my favorite use
I hadn’t really thought about this until looking at SCOTTeVEST, but road trips are probably one of the best situations for this kind of clothing.
You’re getting in and out of the car constantly.
Coffee stop.
Gas station.
Scenic viewpoint.
Lunch.
A short walk around a town.
You don’t necessarily want to grab a backpack every single time.
If your phone, wallet, sunglasses and keys are already in your vest or jacket, you can simply get out of the car.
That’s exactly the kind of convenience I appreciate while traveling.
Nothing complicated. Nothing to organize again every time you stop.
It makes even more sense in cooler weather
In warm weather, wearing a vest specifically for the storage is a choice.
In colder weather, however, you’re already going to wear a jacket.
That’s where this idea becomes even more practical.
If I’m wearing an outer layer anyway, I’d rather have useful pockets than two tiny ones that barely hold a phone.

There’s also the question of security
Whenever I’m traveling, I try not to keep all of my important things together.
Putting a passport, wallet and phone in the same exterior backpack pocket never feels like a particularly good idea.
Interior jacket pockets offer another option.
They’re closer to your body and generally less accessible to someone standing behind you than an outer backpack compartment.
Obviously, clothing doesn’t magically eliminate the possibility of losing something. You still have to pay attention.
But I like having the option to keep the things that matter most on the inside.
Would I replace my backpack with one?
Probably not completely.
And I don’t think that’s really necessary.
If I’m carrying a laptop, water bottle and larger camera equipment, I’m still taking a backpack.
But if I’m walking around for a few hours with nothing more than my everyday essentials, I’d happily leave the bag behind.

The part I like most is actually pretty simple
